In need of God’s Comfort

June 7, 2008 · 2 Comments

“…God [Who is the Source] of every comfort (consolation and encouragement), Who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction)…

For just as Christ’s own] sufferings fall to our lot [as they overflow upon His disciples, and we share and experience them] abundantly, so through Christ comfort (consolation and encouragement) is also [shared and experienced] abundantly by us…

And our hope for you [our joyful and confident expectation of good for you] is ever unwavering (assured and unshaken); for we know that just as you share and are partners in [our] sufferings and calamities, you also share and are partners in [our] comfort (consolation and encouragement).” II Cor 1:4-7

It can be hard to admit–or sometimes even realize–that we need God’s comfort. In the Christian community we may feel to admit this is to admit we are spiritually weak or immature . Yet, Paul was talking to Believers here. He knew that even follower’s of Christ would need comfort. He didn’t expect us to walk independent of one another or in our own strength.

Just as Christ’s own sufferings fall to our lot and overflow upon His disciples….”

Our lot is facing some struggles right now; we are sharing in Christ’s suffering as a corporate body. When one member is wounded we are to share in the suffering…and in the comfort! I want to be the first to admit, I’m hurting. I’m grieving at the loss, the change, and the pain of pruning. I am hopeful for the future, but I’m sad in the present. I need God’s comfort and the presence of the Holy Spirit as a balm for my spirit.

Many of us are dealing with the pains of pruning. We don’t have to pretend we are ok, or act as if it doesn’t hurt.  In fact, as we are honest with God about it we can receive His comfort. As we are honest with each other, we can share His comfort together…
